Well, apparently, in this part of the world, I do. Initially, I wanted to give him cash, but he said he would rather a gift instead. So me, being the lazy arse that I am, I just outright asked him if there is anything that he would like, within budget, of course, and he said that he would like to have some storage to go. And so, I got a few friends together and we pooled some small change together and got him a portable hard disk drive. And off to the shops I go and when I got back, this was what I ended up with.
The casing’s made in Taiwan, so let’s not bother with brand. What is good though is the build quality is decent enough. The housing is primarily casted and machined aluminum, but both the end caps are plastic, so dropping it might crack those. Also in the box: a black vinyl carry-wallet; a double-headed USB cable (more on that later); a small screwdriver; and a small square of foam.
The drive looks decent enough parked in the carry-wallet and is decently protected against most drops. How do I know? I tested it by hurling it against the largest and hardest surface known to man, Ghostline’s forehead. The drive survived the horror and torture subjected without a sweat. Pity I can’t say the same of Ghostline.
Inside, is a 120 GB Western Digital Scorpio hard disk drive. Spinning at 5,400 RPM, this little baby is quite the thirsty hippo. Which brings us back to the double-headed USB cable. This drive doesn’t come with an AC adapter, so all power has to be drawn from the USB bus. Now, a single USB port might not be able to provide sufficient juice (especially from unpowered USB hubs) to power the drive, so one might need to plug in the other port in order to grab more. The little square of foam is stuck on the top of the drive to insulate it from shocks. It might be as effective as using a wet tissue as a prophylactic, but hey, at least it’s better than none at all.
Some struggling and choice swear words later, we have a work of art. Almost. I think.
I sincerely hope the recipients appreciate this.

Your present wrapping skill is good. ^_^
I know. A pity my friends didn’t appreciate it. They hated the wrapping paper too.
